Harlech to Barmouth

Harlech SH287345
Long, sandy beach wrapping round into the Afon Glaslyn estuary. One of the best!! All the beach is backed by dunes and there is always plenty of room for everyone. Carparking and toilets, shops and cafes about half a mile away. Ten minute walk to the beach. Great for a jog or try going by yourself, check the beach is clear ie sea one side and soft sand before the dunes on the other and no obstacles. Close your eyes and sprint as far and as fast as you can - you know its safe but how long can you believe it!! Also possible to walk to Barmouth mainly on beaches but a couple of headland detours and catch the train back.

Llandanwg SH568283
Small sandy beach with rocks and pools on either side. Carpark and toilets, with seasonal cafe. Details of nature walks from the cafe. Turn off at Llanfair just south of Harlech. Train station.

Mochras or Shell Island SH550257
A pebble and rock beach to the north around the Afon Cwmnanctol estuary. Further south there is a huge sandy beach stretching all the way to Barmouth. This is back by a large area of sand dunes. This is a big area - and a large campsite popular with lots of locals in the summer - you have to pay to enter the area but its a beautiful place. Turn left at llanbedr, S of Harlech - sometimes the causeway is closed at high tide.

Tal - y - Bont SH578212
Long sandy beach backed by a pebble bank - part of the stretch from Harlech to Barmouth. Lots of static caravans sited close by and very limited parking away from the sites. Shops and cafes. The sand is firm enough for jogging, cycling and horse riding.

Barmouth SH605160
Large sandy beach but the estuary makes swimming not so safe to the south. A small seaside resort with all the facilities including a station. Nearly continuous sand to Harlech! Also the end of a brilliant walk along the Rhinogs. And the crossing point to the cycle/walkway track to Dolgellau - from which kingfishers can often be seen.
